With 2018 here and in full effect we take time to look back and ponder what we learned in 2016-2017. For me, 2016-2017 was definitely a time of growth & research. Truth is, we learn from trial and error. If we are lucky we have people along the way that can teach us through their experiences so that we do not have to make the same mistakes. So, without further ado here are my top 3 lessons from 2016-2017 in no particular order.
Less Planning & More Action
So much time can be spent on planning that you end up losing out on time to actually get started in your business. As I stated in the periscope, planning is important. However, there is no need to spend your lifetime planning which ultimately means nothing is getting accomplished to move you any closer to starting your business or progressing in growing that business. Start with the basics and have low expectations. We tend to be our own worst enemies and when we set expectations that are too high or unrealistic this can hinder progression from the start. In 2017, this was still very true. However, while running multiple businesses you quickly learn that planning has to take place regardless. However, I have learned that for each moment of planning even the smallest actions should be taken . They key is to keep pushing forward and not be discouraged. Take it all is small parts and take every check on your done list as a small victory.
Eat, Breathe & Sleep Your Business
No one is capable of growing your business like you! You have to be as committed to your business as you will potentially want any partners you may have in the future. Depending on your financial situation when looking into starting/growing a business this lesson may require a little more attention. I had to work other jobs while growing my businesses. Ultimately , I believe that if given the opportunity people would rather be able to quit their current situation and jump full on into growing their dream business. This, is not always realistic. So, the question is how do you eat, breath & sleep your business? Simple, realize that you may have to go with less sleep, and some of those perks that you are use to may have to take a vacation. For me I wasn’t able to get my nails done, and didn’t have much of a personal life because financially it wasn’t realistic. Sacrifice was easy for me because my eye was never off of the ultimate prize. Having the ability to be home with my children and create an income that could sustain my household. Determining your why and keeping it in front of you at all times can prove extremely useful at this point. The hours may be long, and I’m not promising that it will be easy, but the rewards are more than you can imagine.
Continue to be your number one advocate. We all want support from family and loved ones, but you have to be able to push forward regardless of whom is standing behind you to support. Stay focused, keep your eye on the prize and seek mentors and collaborators for support.
Prepare To Put In The Work
When you are not sure what resources you have and how many staff you will be able to start with there is one thing that I want you to do. Stand in front of the mirror and meet your new staff. You have to be willing to do all facets of your business within reason. You also have to ask yourself how you intend to know the worth of positions in your business if you haven’t experienced it yourself? When I hired my very 1st employee I knew exactly what I expected and what was necessary to do the work necessary. It is important to not put more on someone than necessary and you don’t want to give unrealistic expectations. Lastly, there is so much appreciation that I was able to gain from the trial and error of doing things myself. Truthfully, I still prefer this method. By running all aspects of my business and over time being able to delegate out tasks serves two purposes for me. First, I get to see the growth of my business as less and less behind the scenes tasks have to be handled by me personally. Secondly, I know what I should be seeing as results for those delegated tasks. [ctt template=”5″ link=”21eSu” via=”no” ]Everything is a learning process and a potential tool for future growth.[/ctt]
Don’t be afraid of the road ahead! It can seem overwhelming. Truth is, there is nothing that you cant handle. One thing that 2017 taught me was that you have to get comfortable with realizing when you need help. Be able to hire or learn your weakness.
