Top 3 Bosstastic Business Learning Takeaways From 2016-2017

With 2018 here and in full effect we take time to look back and ponder what we learned in 2016-2017. For me, 2016-2017 was definitely a time of growth & research.  It only seemed right to share my Top 3 Bosstastic Business Learning Takeaways From 2016-2017, especially after I had done my first periscope linked right here: Top 3 Bosstastic Takeaways From 2016 . Truth is, we learn from trial and error. If we are lucky we have people along the way that can teach us through their experiences so that we do not have to make the same mistakes. So, without further ado here are my top 3 lessons from 2016-2017 in no particular order.

    Less Planning & More Action

So much time can be spent on planning that you end up losing out on time to actually get started in your business. As I stated in the periscope, planning is important. However, there is no need to spend your lifetime planning which ultimately means nothing is getting accomplished to move you any closer to starting your business or progressing in growing that business. Start with the basics and have low expectations. We tend to be our own worst enemies and when we set expectations that are too high or unrealistic this can hinder progression from the start. [ctt template=”5″ link=”b2PpH” via=”no” ]All it really takes is an idea, passion and a little direction to get you started and heading in the right direction.[/ctt]

In 2017, this was still very true. However, while running multiple businesses you quickly learn that planning has to take place regardless. However, I have learned that for each moment of planning even the smallest actions should be taken . They key is to keep pushing forward and not be discouraged. Take it all is small parts and take every check on your done list as a small victory.

Eat, Breathe & Sleep Your Business

No one is capable of growing your business like you! You have to be as committed to your business as you will potentially want any partners you may have in the future. Depending on your financial situation when looking into starting/growing a business this lesson may require a little more attention. I had to work other jobs while growing my businesses. Ultimately , I believe that if given the opportunity people would rather be able to quit their current situation and jump full on into growing their dream business. This, is not always realistic. So, the question is how do you eat, breath & sleep your business? Simple, realize that you may have to go with less sleep, and some of those perks that you are use to may have to take a vacation. For me I wasn’t able to get my nails done, and didn’t have much of a personal life because financially it wasn’t realistic. Sacrifice was easy for me because my eye was never off of the ultimate prize. Having the ability to be home with my children and create an income that could sustain my household. Determining your why and keeping it in front of you at all times can prove extremely useful at this point.  The hours may be long, and I’m not promising that it will be easy, but the rewards are more than you can imagine.

Continue to be your number one advocate. We all want support from family and loved ones, but you have to be able to push forward regardless of whom is standing behind you to support. Stay focused, keep your eye on the prize and seek mentors and collaborators for support.

Prepare To Put In The Work

When you are not sure what resources you have and how many staff you will be able to start with there is one thing that I want you to do. Stand in front of the mirror and meet your new staff. You have to be willing to do all facets of your business within reason. You also have to ask yourself how you intend to know the worth of  positions in your business if you haven’t experienced it yourself? When I hired my very 1st employee I knew exactly what I expected and what was necessary to do the work necessary. It is important to not put more on someone than necessary and you don’t want to give unrealistic expectations. Lastly, there is so much appreciation that I was able to gain from the trial and error of doing things myself. Truthfully, I still prefer this method. By running all aspects of my business and over time being able to delegate out tasks serves two purposes for me. First, I get to see the growth of my business as less and less behind the scenes tasks have to be handled by me personally. Secondly, I know what I should be seeing as results for those delegated tasks. [ctt template=”5″ link=”21eSu” via=”no” ]Everything is a learning process and a potential tool for future growth.[/ctt]

Don’t be afraid of the road ahead! It can seem overwhelming. Truth is, there is nothing that you cant handle. One thing that 2017 taught me was that you have to get comfortable with realizing when you need help. Be able to hire or learn your weakness.

What did 2016-2017 teach you that will help you make a bigger move in your business/life in 2018?

Stop trying to reinvent the wheel! This is one of the main concepts discussed in my new book coming out later this year ”

“. We spend so much time trying to figure out how to do it better than those before us and that is the wrong way to look at it. It is not about taking someone else’s ideas and seeing how you can make them better. It is about bringing that missing link that your ideal client needs to the forefront and showing how it will best work for him or her.

Here is where I say stop trying to figure out how to reinvent the wheel and figure out what it is that the wheel is missing, and how you can bring that missing component to your audience. No fluff, no b.s. fill the need with the missing link. As we have shifted into such a social media driven world we as consumers are constantly looking for hat can fix that one thing we all are missing. You could even luck up and create something that I need and didn’t even know I was missing it until you brought it to my attention.

Who cares what they think? In business you have to have a tough skin!  There is no room to be a baby and wear your heart on your sleeve. You will hear no’s and there will be naysayers. Your mission is to trudge forward and make it happen. If you are easily swayed by the opinions of others than truth is business startups are probably not for you. I always share with my clients the importance of being transparent in the way you do business, be honest with yourself, and be able to move past those that dont understand nor want you to have any form of success.

I could sit here and tell you that the whole world is on your side and that everyone is cheering for you to make it and proper in (insert industry  or product here), but truth is that would be a lie. There are those that will not help you because they are afraid that your light may shine just a little bit brighter than theres or that you may make them less significant or that you may do whatever it is that they do better. When you finally get comfortable with that reality, you have already won half of the battle. Not everyone is for you , and not everyone will help you. So, stop worrying about the naysayers and keep moving forward.

Be transparent and honest! There is no special way to say it but plainly! Be the kind of person that you would want to work with. For me I don’t sugar coat anything.  My clients know that I will give honest and direct answers to their questions. I am transparent in how I do business. There should be no room for misinterpretations.  When I was first starting out I remember a business coach I had expressed that I should not display my pricings on any of my sites or blogs. So I went along with it, truth is though I didn’t receive much business and by the time I got far enough into the process where my coach told me was where I should have pitched my pricing clients either felt duped  or mislead. I also found that I was putting a lot of time into clients that were not my ideal clients and that couldn’t always afford my services.

I also feel that you should be pretty upfront with letting a client/customer know what they are receiving for their investment. Hiding your prices and making potential clients/customers search for products, services and prices will do nothing but lose you the sale and or a potential client. If you are scared to put your prices and what you offer for those prices out there then you might want to rethink what you are offering and your pricepoint!

In The End You Determine What You Want To Put Out There For The World!

Please remember that you are the keeper of your destiny.  There is a client out there waiting for you and your products and services. They need what you have to offer. So, please  speak up and be heard. Know that you don’t have to go the road alone. Coaches and strategist are out here  ready to help you be great!

As a coach & strategist I can admit that I didn’t always want to admit that I needed help. I too tried to reinvent the wheel and made all the mistakes I did because I was so sure that I could go the road alone. If that was the case then coaches wouldn’t exist and coaches wouldn’t have their own coaches. We realize the need and it is one that we ourselves cannot fill so we go out and seek to fill that void akin to what your next client is doing. So, remember to ask questions don’t be afraid. Like I always say closed mouths will never get fed.
